This Women’s History Month freebie includes a print and digital format to guide your students through a mini-research process (either on the internet or through biographies) and learn about an important woman in history and her life story. Once the student locates information and records the facts on the research notes page provided, he/she can put the information together in a biographical poem called The Important Thing, which is modeled after Margaret Wise Brown’sย The Important Book.
There are two versions of the poem included. Students may research a single woman, or they may research three notable women and create a poem accordingly. I have listed several good websites, so the kids can locate material written for kids.
This poem could be used as a stand-alone activity (great for a bulletin board with some thematic art) or it would make a wonderful addition to a full research report for Women’s History.
Great skills can be found in this activity, such as determining importance when looking for some key facts about the woman’s life, reading comprehension is very important here, as well as computer proficiency skills.
